It's MR visuals

Deemed one of the '10 DJs to see before you die', Britain's Yoda samples almost everything

Cartoon music, scratching and visuals are what British DJ Yoda usually brings with him to every party. And next Thursday it's Bangkok's turn to party with the DJ with much praise and reputation under his belt.

The White Room at Bed Supperclub will transform itself into a club/cinema for a special night where Yoda graces the deck.

Inspired by movies and cartoons, Yoda (real name Duncan Beiny) put his imagination, his masterful scratching techniques and the love of hip-hop and all music into his debut album "The Amazing Adventures of DJ Yoda".

Released in 2006, the album earned him a widespread reputation as one of the global scene's best hip-hop visual jockeys. He has also been nominated by Q Magazine as one of the "Ten DJs To See Before You Die", has released a series of mix-tapes, and has toured the globe with Goldie and the Scratch Perverts.

He is the hip-hop correspondent for IDJ Magazine, and also writes the DJ page for Hip-Hop Connection. He has also been on the judging panel for the DMC DJ World Finals for the last three years.

With his eclectic mixing and scratching on the deck, the fans can expect to see visual effects of movies and TV shows like "Star Wars", "He Man and the Masters of the Universe", "The A-Team", "The Goonies" and "Thunderbirds" as well as music artists like Aerosmith and Elvis Presley, among many others.

Bangkok's multi-award-winning scratch DJ Jedie will also be there to kick-start the show.

DJ Yoda shared the game plan with us in an e-mail interview.

What are you working on now?

My new artist album, my second one. It's getting there!

What makes you want to be a DJ?

Being obsessed with discovering music.

What inspires you the most?

When I see a part of a movie, or hear a part of a song that I feel I can include in a mix.

What's with the alias Yoda?

I don't like it! It was named upon me when I was much younger.

What's your music background, and why do you like hip-hop?

My parents worked in the music industry, and I grew up listening to pop music and hip-hop. Throughout the '90s I listened to nothing but rap music, but I feel it started going downhill after that, and I was discovering the rawness and energy that I loved in hip-hop in all these new kinds of global dance music.

What's the hip-hop scene like in England?

I don't think I'm part of that very much anymore - the music I play is too eclectic. Although weirdly, that's what hip-hop is to me - a mix of all kinds of music.

Where do you see yourself in the scene?

I think, and I hope, that what I do is very different to everyone else - in a way outside of the traditional dance music or hip-hop scenes. Definitely my video show is very different to anything I've ever seen in a club before!

Who do you make the videos with?

I don't work with one person - someone different for every project. Although most of my stuff is sampled from movies, TV shows, commercials and YouTube.

Which cartoon character is your favourite?

Hard question! I like Comic Book Guy from "The Simpsons".

Q Magazine named you "one of the ten DJs you need to see before you die". Who would make the Top 5 on your own list?

That's so hard, as I'm inspired by loads of different DJs, but Q-Bert has always been a big inspiration in terms of scratching.

Who's your dream collaborator?

Hmmm … Johnny Cash and John Lennon!

What's the plan for Bangkok this time?

It's going to be something very different to what normally happens there - like YouTube being mixed and scratched live in the club, so come and check it out!
