The fine arts of printmaking and drawing are on show in two exhibitions in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai hosts two art exhibitions this week that together should demonstrate the diversity in modern drawing and printmaking.

The second Bangkok Triennale International Print and Drawing Exhibition opens tomorrow at the Chiang Mai University gallery, displaying the competition's winners from around the world.

The show - already been seen at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, Silpakorn University's campus in Nakhon Pathom and Burapa University in Chonburi - features the best of the 3,800 works submitted by 1,389 artists from 64 countries.

Judges picked 249 finalists - 159 prints and 90 drawings - and then 22 winners to share Bt2 million. The Grand Prize winners received Bt400,000 each.

Sandro Bracchitta of Italy won the Grand Prize for a print, Sean Taft Caulfield of Canada the second-place Triennale Prize and Nguyen Thi Hoa of Vietnam, Hisashi Kurachi of Japan and Tyler Starr of the United States shared the "Excellent Prize 3".

In the drawing category, the Grand Prize went to Thanakorn Buaplod and the Triennale Prize to Anuphong Chantorn, both Thais. Taking the Excellent Prize 3 were Andrey Bassalyga of Belarus, Aphjchat Iamvijarn of Thailand and Tomasz Pietrek of Poland.

The touring show is co-hosted by Silpakorn University and the Siam Cement Group's SCG Foundation.

On Thursday, Australian Ambassador Paul Grigson will open "Erased", a collection of contemporary drawings from his country, also at the Chiang Mai University gallery. This exhibition was also previously on view at Silpakorn.

Continuing until July 29, "Erased" features the work of Christian Capurro, Simryn Gill, Jonathan Jones, Tom Nicholson, Raquel Ormella and Vernon Ah Kee, all of whom have either urban or indigenous backgrounds.

They explore issues ranging from the environment and nationalism to how public images are formed in contemporary culture.
