PayPal Launches Additional Layer of Consumer Protection for Online Shoppers in Thailand

Empowering Thai consumers to shop with greater peace of mind on millions of websites; Providing small businesses in Thailand with a seal of trust to help boost their online sales

PayPal announced the launch of its Buyer Protection policy for consumers in Thailand who shop online through their PayPal accounts. As online shopping becomes part of our daily lives, this new policy aims to better protect 16 million Internet users in Thailand and give them more confidence to buy goods from over 8 million merchants that accept PayPal as a payment method on their websites.  PayPal's Buyer Protection policy is applicable to all Thailand -registered PayPal users from today onwards and more info can be found at https://www.paypal-apac.com/buyerprotection/th.

Recent research by PayPal and Blackbox showed that online shopping has gained considerable traction among Thai consumers with more than half intending to buy online and 53% of overall expenditure expected to be spent online. However, when shopping with a new or unfamiliar online retailer, especially on international websites, consumers are usually worried about the goods not being delivered after making the purchase. This concern is now eliminated with PayPal's Buyer Protection as the policy enables Thai consumers, who have purchased goods via PayPal but have not received them from the seller, to get their money back for the full value of the item.

"Thai consumers are looking for better protection and peace of mind when they shop on the Internet - whether it's a 100 Baht toy or a 200,000 Baht watch.  Shopping online with PayPal is already safer and more secure as our first layer of protection is to keep our users' sensitive financial information or credit card details private when they shop on millions of websites that accept PayPal," said Elias Ghanem, General Manager, and PayPal Southeast Asia & India. "Now we are adding an extra layer of safety and security with our Buyer Protection policy, so that Thai online shoppers who purchase eligible items via PayPal can get a full refund if they do not receive the items."

"I enjoy online shopping as I can find good bargains on the Internet and can buy unique products from overseas that might not be locally available.  With PayPal's Buyer Protection policy, I can shop online with greater confidence as I know that I can get my money back if I do not receive the purchased item," said Savinee Thongpond, an avid online shopper. "Another great benefit of being a PayPal user!"

PayPal Buyer Protection Policy can benefit online sellers, too

At the same time, the Buyer Protection policy can help small-and-medium sized PayPal merchants in Thailand to grow their online sales as 84 million PayPal users from over 190 markets worldwide will be more comfortable shopping on unfamiliar sites when they can pay via PayPal.  Over twenty merchants, including Tuffsport.com, Acmamall.com, iStyles.com and Prince's Flower Shop, from Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, are promoting PayPal's Buyer Protection policy on their websites as part of the launch today.  The launch promotions can be found at https://www.paypal-apac.com/buyerprotection/th.

"Assurance and trust are some of the key factors that customers take into consideration when shopping on the Internet. While PayPal's Buyer Protection policy is a great initiative to protect consumers' interests, it is also a way for me to increase my sales as more customers will feel safer and more secure to shop on my site when they see that I accept PayPal," said Wootinun Oak Sung-ong, Managing Director, Tuff Company Group.  "PayPal's Buyer Protection can increase traffic to my online store and help me get more customers - a wonderful boost for my business!"
