GOVERNMENT HOUSE

Feng shui adjusted to attract luck

According to Chinese geomancy beliefs, Government House has been redecorated to attract luck, prosperity and peace.

As per feng shui, six potted plants of a particular species have been placed opposite the entrance of the Thai Ku Fah Building, which houses Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's office. The bright yellow and green plants are believed to drive away bad luck, enhance luck and prosperity as well as create unity, encourage honesty and boost charisma.

Feng shui is an ancient Chinese system of aesthetics that applies laws of astronomy and geography to decorate homes and offices.

In 2008, yellow-shirt protesters besieged Government House for six months in order to oust the Samak Sundaravej and Somchai Wongsawat governments that were considered proxies of deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

One protester was killed and 22 others wounded after the yellow-shirt encampment was hit by grenade propelled by an M79 launcher. The movement left the seat of government in early December and moved on to rally at the capital's two main airports to pressure the Somchai government to step down.

Similarly, the red-shirted Democratic Alliance against Dictatorship launched protests at Government House to get Abhisit to dissolve Parliament.
