Dams critical



The government will launch cloud-seeding operations after the Bhumibol and Sirikit reservoirs had sunk to a critical level due to the severe drought, but Bangkok will not go dry.

"Officials have confirmed that cloud formations over the North are suited to rainmaking and they will begin flights above the dams," Deputy Prime Minister Sanan Kachornprasart said yesterday.

In the Northeast, the water crisis had eased a bit after a depression moved in, bringing some rainfall to the region.

Farmers should postpone the planting of in-season or wet-cultivated rice for a month or so to ensure a sufficient supply of water, he said

"There is enough tap water for Bangkok, as we have diverted flows from the mekong River," he said.

Pa Sak and Kwai Noi dams were not at a dangerous level yet, he added.
