Armed forces told to beware of sabotage

In the face of fragile security, the Defence Ministry has instructed all military installations to take necessary precautions against acts of sabotage, spokesman Colonel Thanathip Sawangsaeng said yesterday.

The instructions came after Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan held a meeting with the armed forces' top brass.

"Prawit voiced concern over possible attacks against storage facilities of arms and petroleum," Thanathip said.

At the meeting, the defence minister also urged military leaders to help the government bring about reconciliation, he said.

The military leaders would strive to restore normalcy and peace by rallying for the public to unite under the auspices of His Majesty the King, he said.

As a sign of the resumption of normalcy, the cordon of troops guarding Government House has withdrawn and police have lifted all road barriers in the area.

The prime minister is scheduled to convene a meeting with the diplomatic corps and foreign media tomorrow to explain the state of the country now that the Rajprasong rally has been brought to an end.

Security sweeps at Government House should be completed by Monday, when every government office will resume full work schedules.

In light of assassination threats against government leaders, security measures for PM Abhisit Vejjajiva and his deputy Suthep Thaugsuban have been tightened.

A four-member bomb squad has been deployed at Government House to check for explosives, and bomb disposal experts have been assigned for Abhisit's and Suthep's motorcades.
