Center to help victims of clashes

A temporary centre has been set up in Bangkok to help victims of the clashes between troops and red-shirt protesters with issues of human rights, legal matters and political abuse.

People can also file reports of dead, wounded, arrested and missing relatives, as well as other troubles, centre chairman Pairoj Polpetch said yesterday.

The centre's staff will give advice to visitors, record details about the complaints and contact resources, including state, private and independent organisations. The staff will also campaign for these agencies to assist the victims, he said.

The centre will be open from 10am-5pm until July at the 14 October 1973 Memorial on Rajdamnoen Avenue, with at least five lawyers and human-rights activists on hand as counsellors.

People can also call (086) 080 8767 or 477 or e-mail hlachumanrights@gmail.com to seek support.

National Police spokesman Lt-General Pongsapat Pongcharoen urged relatives of any people who disappeared during the protest to inform police. They should take the latest photographs of the missing person and provide information about any identifying marks or abnormalities.

The data will be sent to the Criminal Records Division for distribution to the forensic institutes of hospitals.

The whole process should take about 10 days, Pongsapat added.

Meanwhile, the Public Health Ministry is reaching out to people still in shock from the clashes.

"We will help ease their pain, stress or depression," Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said yesterday.

Mental care will be extended to not just the wounded, their relatives or families of those killed but also people who remain shaken.

A team from his ministry visited the community behind Pathum Wanaram Temple.

Dr Panpimol Wipulakorn, director of the Rajanukul Institute, said three young children had become panicky and unable to sleep after gunshots and explosions were heard in their neighbourhood.
