FDA cracks down on importer of 'super cure'

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cracked down on the importer of "Intra" food supplements that boasts of curing cancer, diabetes and heart disease as well as on two Nonthaburi community radio stations for advertising it. Samples of the product were sent for lab tests and police seized stocks worth Bt2.2 million.

Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit told a press conference yesterday that after receiving complaints, the consumer protection agency and FDA officials last Friday inspected the offices of the importer, Lifestyle Pacific Rim (Thailand), in Bangkok's Klong Toei district.

They seized 1,392 product bottles carrying reportedly inaccurate labels as well as 10 advertising CDs as evidence. They also collected three samples for lab tests. The officials also visited the FM94.3 MHz and FM100.25 MHz radio stations in Nonthaburi, which reportedly provided advertisements claiming the products could cure fatal diseases.

FDA deputy chief Narangsan Pirakit warned the stations to not advertise food supplements as a cure and consumers to not believe such claims because supplements are not proper medication.
