What is it with broke comedians?

Comedian Anchulee "Noi" Pho-ngarm has something else in common with her brother, funnyman Thep: money problems. But Noi has somehow been able to reduce her Bt8-million debt to Bt1 million - by selling somtam!

That's a lot of somtam.

In fact, Noi set up booths - red shirts permitting - in department stores and markets and two days a month at Channel 3's Maleenont Building on Rama IV Road.

"It still hasn't been enough, so I'm considering opening a shop too," she says.

Noi figures a permanent outlet would get around the problem of having to close her booths when the reds are annoyed - she once went 10 days without a sale.

Of course, the reds - most of whom hail from the Northeast - have all the authentic somtam they can eat, so they don't need Noi's help.

A lifetime of lessons

Fomer Foreign Minister Kantathee Supamongkol joined the New Daddy Club last October when he welcomed daughter Rene in the US, where he lectures at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

What's the assessment, Pop?

"She cries so loud that I think she could grow up and be a politician," Kantathee tells Hello! magazine.

Meanwhile her dad's gone way beyond scouting out a good kindergarten for her. He was schooled in America and would love the same for her. We're sure he's already got the application form for UCLA.

Busted with burgers

It's widely held that the McDonald's outlet at Amarin Plaza is a favourite gathering spot for red shirts, a fount of all the latest protest gossip.

The latest we hear is that red leader Kwanchai Praipana is a regular, but not for the Big Macs.

"He just wants to cool down inside," a reporter on the beat tells us. "He misses home."

The police might be able to nab Kwanchai in a sentimental moment. They can just go in plainclothes and ask for fries and a shake while they scope out the suspects.
