Lottery former chief acquitted of lottery draw fixing

The Ratchadapisek Criminal Court yesterday acquitted Government Lottery Office (GLO) former director Chaiwat Pasokpakdee and senior official Uthen Jensakhu from the case related to a lottery draw fixing on June1, 2001.

Previously Nonthaburi influential figure Narong "Klom Bangkruay" Ounphaet and three accomplices were given a three-year jail term for recruiting people to attend the draw and to pick a marked ball to fix the lottery result. The case was currently at the Supreme Court now.

The two officials were accused of not performing their duty in the face of suspicious collusion. The court yesterday ruled that Uthen, being in charge of the draw, was negligent but didn't intend to cause damage to GLO, while Chaiwat, who at the time was in Chiang Mai, promptly reported the draw fixing to supervisors. Hence the court saw the duo didn't abuse their authority as accused. The court also said that there was no evidence to link the two former officials to the gang to convince that they were in the crime, hence acquitted the two officials.
