DAILY BOMB ATTACK

Bomb attack at Banharn's house not terrorism : police

The grenade attack at the Bangkok home of former prime minister Banharn Silapaarcha late Sunday was an attempt to create a situation, not a "terrorist" attack, a senior police chief said Tuesday.

Pol MajGen Paisan Cheuarod said that police are now questioning eight witnesses, five passersby and three police officers, and also seeking a witness who saw the motorcycle driver to collect more evidence and seek court approval for an arrest warrant.

A Bangkok court on Monday issued an arrest warrant for the grenade thrower, who was a passenger on the motorcycle.

A Bangplad police officer guarding Banharn's residence saw a motorcycle speed past the front of Banharn's home late Sunday and the passenger hurled a grenade, believed to be an M67, at a police tent near the former premier's home at Soi Charan Sanitwong 57, in Bangplad district.

Eleven persons, including three police, were injured in the attack.

Closed circuit television (CCTV) on the routes the attackers were thought to have used for their escape captured no footage of the attackers, according to the commander.

Gen Paisan said he believed the case is just an attempt to create a situation, not aiming to kill anyone and may not be considered as "terrorism."

He added he does not know if the attackers are the same group of persons who fired a grenade at Mr Banharn's last month.
