Two Iranians were arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport on Sunday for allegedly trying to smuggle one kilogram of "ice" or crystal methamphetamine hydrochloride into Thailand. Officials said the drug was worth about Bt3.5 million.
The suspects Morteza Abbasi, 21, and Akbar Zerami, 23, swallowed the drug before they boarded a flight from Tehran to Bangkok, they said.
X-ray examinations at the Thai airport showed Abbasi had 88 suspicious "chunks" in his stomach while Zerami's stomach had 68 suspicious "chunks".
"We received a tip-off. We searched their luggage and subjected them to X-ray examination," Customs Department deputy director general Chaweewan Kongcharoen-kijkul said yesterday.
The suspects, she said, had pleaded guilty. They said they were offered US$1,000 (Bt32,000) for this smuggling trip, with half paid in advance.
Abbasi and Zerami have been detained pending further legal action.
