Chai hopes Newin can become PM

House Speaker Chai Chidchob yesterday revealed a desire to seeing his son Newin Chidchob become prime minister before he dies.

Speaking on his 83rd birthday, the Parliament President said if Newin was blessed, he could become PM.

"We cannot block those who are destined to rise to their glory. I had said earlier that Abhisit Vejjajiva would one day become PM. If Newin is blessed, he could also become (PM),'' he said.

He said if the media backed Newin and did not write bad articles about him, he believed it was possible for his son to become PM. "If this happens before I die, we will be truly blessed,'' he said.

Newin is serving a five-year ban from politics which is due to expire in two years. But he remains a key figure for the Bhum Jai Thai Party. He responded to his father's remarks about him becoming PM by saying he hadn't thought about returning to politics as he was still having fun running a football team.

"I am happy with being a husband of Buri Ram Provincial Administrative Organisation (official Karuna Chidchob),'' he said.

Throngs of ministers, officals and MPs from the Friends of Newin faction went to a function yesterday for Chai's birthday. The event saw 85 monks perform a religious ceremony and a Bai Sri rite to bring prosperity and luck for Chai.

He said the present he wanted most for this year was for the country to enjoy peace and an end to the political divide.
