A man yesterday rammed his Porsche Targa sports car into the red-shirt rally at Rajprasong intersection, failing to hurt anyone but smashing nine motorcycles belonging to the protesters and destroying a fire hydrant.
The attack at 11.20am in front of the Holiday Inn on Sukhumvit Road outraged the red-shirt crowd.
The young driver escaped a mobbing after police came to protect him and red-shirt guards calmed the demonstrators down.
They shouted abuse at the man, who prostrated himself to the bystanders and smashed in the car's front windshield.
"Why the hell are you bowing now?" screamed one. "Don't hit [the car], don't attack the man! We still have a major battle ahead of us," shouted another.
"Nobody can take your car. It's wrecked," a policeman told the man as he was whisked away from the scene.
The windshield was plastered with membership stickers to posh places such as the Bangkok Royal Sports Club and Siam Paragon Platinum Club.
Police also discovered a black handgun and showed it to the crowd, which became even angrier as a result.
