GRENADE ATTACKS

No progress in blast probes

Bang Khunnont police said yesterday they faced difficulties in solving the grenade attack at the Legal Execution Department late on Wednesday night.

"All bystanders questioned said they saw no attackers and the three night guards on duty were inside the building and did not see the attack" said Station chief Pol Colonel Chawengsak Sinsoongsud.

"We are now relying on footage from security cameras around the area, because there were no cameras installed near the blast site," he added.

"We expect the attacks were carried out to cause disruption, possibly for politicallyrelated motives, as there is no known conflict within the department. We will pursue the attackers as soon as we can," the officer said.

An M67 grenade was lobbed over the fence of the department late on Wednesday night. It went off and caused property damage and a 30cm crater, but no casualties.

In Chiang Mai, an M26 grenade was planted near a Bangkok Bank teller machine in front of a company located in San Kamphaeng district. The USmade grenade was employed using a mosquitorepellent circular joss stick as a detonator, but the fire went out before police found it at 7am.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, who oversees internal security affairs, said a state of emergency would not be declared even in the wake of a massive rally by redshirted demonstrators threatened for Saturday.

Asked for a report on the police investigation into Tuesday's M79 attack on the Public Health Ministry compound, he said: "No progress."

Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, responding to progress of the military's investigation into another M79 attack on the 1st Infantry Regiment compound early on, quipped: "What can I do about it?"

Asked to comment if the RPG attack was aimed at his office at the Defence Ministry, he said: "Just aim it good," before he lectured reporters about his experience in combat and knowledge of RPG rounds, saying: "RPG rounds are always live - despite their long service since 1969 - when they were first used while I served in combat."
