Senate to call general debate over red-shirt protest

Senate Speaker Prasopsuk Boondet said on Wednesday the Senate would call a general debate without a resolution to be passed in order to find solution to the political problems facing the country.

He said the move came after 66 Senators took recourse Article 161 that allowed one-third of the total number of the existing members of the Senate
to submit a motion for a general debate.

Prasopsuk said he would inform Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to be present at the Senate debate that is expected to take place within next week.

Meanwhile a group of 40 Senators want the government to take drastic action by arresting the red-shirt leaders in light of intelligence warning of sabotage and send the protesters home. They totally disapproved of the red shirts’ move of pouring blood as they believed the action poses health risks on the residents of Bangkok.

Five senators led by Lertrat Ratanawanit came to the rally stage of the red shirts at Phan Fah Bridge as mediators to get all the protesters’ demand to discuss in the general debate.

Lertrat asked Veera Musikapong, a key red-shirt leader what other demands they want from the government apart from House dissolution. The Senators also asked Veera for assurance that the protesters would not disrupt the 116th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly, which he did.
