Pol Col Sompian promoted to be police general



His Majesty the King has signed a royal order promoting the late Pol Col Sompian Eksomya and his subordinate who were slain in an insurgency attack in Bangnang Sata district of Yala province last week.

Pol Col Sompian, superintendent of Bannang Sata district and his subordinate, Pol Sgt Somphon Intarabovorn, were killed in a roadside bomb attack in the district last Friday.

Sompian is appointed to the rank of police general while Pol Sgt Somphon to the rank of police colonel.

Both police officers were also given royal decorations.

Four police officers, including Sompian and Somphon, were seriously wounded in an ambush as they were travelling in a pickup truck in a patrol trip to Lue Kong village in tambon Talingchan of Bannang Sata district.

While they were getting near the village, an unknonwn number of insurgents denonated a landmine planted on the road and opened fire at their vehicle.

Meanwhile His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn will preside over the cremation of Sompian in Songkhla's Muang district on Tuesday. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva will also go to Songkhla to attend the cremation.
