Nam Theun 2 starts power supply to Thailand

A scene from the hydropower plant

Nam Theun 2 hydroelectric project in Laos has begun the commercial export of electricity to Thailand.

Starting on Monday, the project's four export production turbines started full generation service, supplying the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand with 1,000MW of electricity.

The supply to the Thai grid comes as power demand in Thailand approaches its seasonal peak. Sales of electricity to the Lao state utility, Electricite du Laos, have also begun.

Nam Theun 2 Power Company (NTPC) is owned 35 per cent by Electricite de France, 25 per cent by the Lao government, 25 per cent by Egat and 15 per cent by Italian-Thai Development.

It has a 25-year concession, promising over US$2 billion to the Lao government as royalties, dividends and taxes.
