Cow dung attack on PM's house thwarted

A Nakhon Phanom man was arrested after trying to throw two bags of cow dung into the Prime Minister's residence on Sukhumvit Road yesterday morning. He was later sentenced to a 10-day detention.

Khampong Samart, 56, tried to throw the first bag of cow dung into the PM's residence at 7.15am but the bag got stuck on the fence.

The man was promptly apprehended by police while he was trying to hurl a second bag over the fence. The incident took place five minutes after the premier left his home.

The self-proclaimed red-shirt supporter Khampong told police he took a bus from Nakhon Phanom on Monday night to arrive in Bangkok early yesterday morning. Then he took a cab to the PM's residence with the two bags of cow dung he had brought from Nakhon Phanom. He claimed his raid was in support of Nakhon Phanom police officers affected by transfer orders - and also he didn't like this PM.

"Before I left home, I stole Bt10,000 from my wife, who is a yellow-shirt supporter… When we watch news we watch both colours and we don't fight over politics - but I feel very uneasy with the government's double standard approach. I thought about it for two weeks and grabbed two bags of cow dung to make a symbolic gesture," he said.

Khampong was taken to the Southern Bangkok Court and was initially sentenced to a 20-day jail term, later halved due to his useful confession. Since he had no previous criminal record, the court reduced the sentence to a 10-day detention at the Central Prison in Pathum Thani.

Meanwhile Deputy PM Suthep Thaugsuban said he had been informed of the cow dung attack. This was the second similar raid - a man lobbed four bags of human waste into the premier's residence last month. That culprit was sentenced to a five-day detention at the Thong Lor precinct cells.

The cow dung attack occurred a few days before the red-shirts's mass rally scheduled for next weekend.
