Student files malpractice complaint with Leena's support

Leena Jang Foundation's chairwoman Leena Jangjanja yesterday took a Ramkhamhaeng University student to file a police complaint against the Bang Mod 1 Hospital for malpractice, which resulted in her losing her right eye. The hospital, however, insisted that the patient was given the best care available but the infection had spread so fast that the eye had to be removed.

Former factory worker, 23-year-old Kornsiri Phrasriram, said that in early November 2007 she started suffering severe headaches and decided to seek treatment in a hospital under the Social Security Office (SSO). During the two-day hospital stay, she developed pain in her right eye, though her medical certificate said she had developed a tooth infection resulting in her eye getting swollen.

However, when her headaches persisted, she was told that she had a fungal infection in her eye. Then she was transferred to Siriraj Hospital where she underwent an operation to remove her right eye on November 16, 2007. After the surgery, the hospital refused to give her an artificial eye and also asked her to transfer to another hospital under her SSO membership. Therefore, Kornsiri decided to turn to Leena for help.

Leena said that since case's statute of limitations was up, they had decided to file a complaint at the Crime Suppression Division so they could file a lawsuit demanding compensation. Police officers interviewed Kornsiri yesterday for initial fact-finding.

Meanwhile, Bang Mod 1 Hospital director Dr Tharapon Trikhunprapa said Kornsiri had been given the best treatment available but her infection had spread very fast, a condition complicated further by the fact that she has high blood sugar. So, the doctors had no choice but to remove her right eye, otherwise the infection would have spread to her other eye or even killed her.

He added that Kornsiri continued receiving treatment in 2008 and since she had spent more than 100 nights at the hospital, the SSO wanted to find out if she was a disabled patient. The hospital then contacted an expert in Siriraj to make an artificial eye, but the patient complained that it was not pretty enough. So they decided to make a new one that could be removed, but he said the hospital never heard from her again.
