Progressive metallers Between the Buried and Me come to Bangkok
American progressive metal quintet Between the Buried and Me will be in Bangkok next week as part of an Asia-Pacific tour.
The prog-metallers, featuring Tommy Giles Rogers on vocals and keyboards, guitarists Paul Waggoner and Dustie Waring, Blake Richardson on drums, and Dan Briggs on bass, are touring Asia to promote their latest album, "The Great Misdirect", which hit the stores in October.
"Between The Buried And Me can be compared to Dream Theatre though their music is heavier," says Saranpong "Yos" Sookpanon, a contributor to The Guitar Magazine, who's worked with organiser Indy Pop in putting the concert together. "Both acts are influenced by Pink Floyd and Rush.
"Between The Buried And Me's latest album is more progressive than their earlier stuff with each of the six tracks running for almost 10 minutes. Thai fans will be more familiar with their 'Colours', album, which did well here," he adds.
Fans at the concert can expect to hear the six songs from "The Great Misdirect", titled "Mirrors", "Obfuscation", "Disease, Injury, Madness", "Fossil Genera - A Feed from Cloud Mountain", "Desert of Song" and "Swim to the Moon", plus an assortment of the band's earlier music.
Hailing from North Carolina, the band takes the name Between The Buried and Me from the lyrics of Counting Crows' song "Ghost Train".
They released their self-titled debut album through Lifeforce Records in 2002 and earned a small but select following with their signature sound of stomping, progressive metal and hardcore filled with brutal breakdowns mixed with intricate shifts in mood. They also caught the attention of Victory Records, to which they later signed. Victory Records reissued the album in 2004 as an enhanced CD.
In 2003, the band released their second studio album, "The Silent Circus", featuring the singles "Mordecai", "Aesthetic", and "Camilla Rhodes". This album put them on the map and it wasn't long before they were playing at the heavy metal summer camp known as Ozzfest.
"The Anatomy of…", their fourth release in 2006, contained renditions of classics by Metallica, Queen, Depeche Mode and Faith No More and was released just as Ozzfest kicked off that summer. That was the catalyst for the band to begin work on what would become "Colours" in 2007.
After their Thai gig, the band heads to Japan and Australia.
