Prasit selected as NTC chairman

A majority of the national telecom regulator's seven commissioners yesterday selected Prasit Prapinmongkolkarn as chairman in a secret vote.

Suchart Suchartvejapoom, a member of the National Telecommunications Commission, gave no details beyond saying that Prasit had been selected as chairman.

An NTC source said Suchart would serve as acting chairman for board meetings until Prasit's appointment is royally endorsed.

The NTC will soon begin the application process for the position of secretarygeneral.

However, the sixyearterm of Prasit and two other commissioners - Suchart and Sudharma Yoonaidharma - will end in October. A selecŽtion committee is now being formed to find canŽdidates to replace them.

The NTC originally had seven members, until Artorn Chandavimol resigned in 2006 before his term expired. In 2007, three commissioners were balloted out of their seats in line with the frequency allocation law.

The Senate recently appointed four new comŽmissioners to these vacant seats.

The NTC intends to allocate thirdgeneraŽtion 2.1gigahertz wireless broadband spectrum licences this year after a lengthy delay.

It expects to finalise a 3G licensing plan withŽin the next three months and issue the licences by yearend.
