Thanks to a flood of donations over the past few weeks, the founder of a charity home has been able to clear her Bt3million in debts.
"I would like to thank all the donors," said Nuannoi Timkul, fondly known as Kru Noi.
The 67-year-old woman founded Baan Kru Noi charity home for underprivileged children about three decades ago.
Over the past few years, Nuannoi borrowed a lot of money from loan sharks to keep her charity home open.
However, as the debt amount soared above Bt10 million, she finally petitioned for help and wrote directly to Assistant National Police Commissioner Lt Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen late last year.
Pongsapat visited her on February 7 and looked into her grievances.
Together with police officers from the Rat Burana Police Station, Pongsapat then talked Nuannoi's creditors through various rounds of negotiation. Finally, they agreed to reduce the debt amount from Bt10.6 million to Bt3 million.
On February 15, Pongsapat also helped Nuannoi open a bank account and called for donations.
Up to 2,119 people responded and wired money to the account to help her over the past few weeks. The highest donation amount via the account was Bt200,000 and the lowest Bt8.
In all, the bank account fund totalled Bt3,285,000.
Accompanied by Pongsapat, Nuannoi closed the bank account yesterday and repaid her creditors.
Pongsapat said Nuannoi would keep the remaining amount of Bt285,000 for children at her charity home.
