Huawei to push mobile broadband technology

Rising consumer demand for wireless data services will also drive demand for mobile broadband network equipment in Thailand, said Richard Zhang, managing director of Huawei Technologies (Thailand).

He said Huawei this year would focus on mobile broadband technology, "green" technology and Internet Protocol convergence technology.

China's major telecom-equipment supplier has developed green equipment - fourth-generation cellular base stations - to reduce the consumption of energy.

Besides 3G wireless broadband network equipment, Huawei's portfolio ranges from mobile broadband devices to services, such as network roll-out, network integration, customer support and network technology services.

Local cellular operators last year reported growth in their data-service user numbers. For example, Advanced Info Service's number of active mobile Internet users rose to 5.3 million from 4.5 million in 2008.

Total Access Communication, which anticipates a mobile data-usage hike this year, plans to enhance the capacity of its high-speed data transmission network by 30 per cent this quarter.

The move is a major step for DTAC in capturing the fast-growing smart-phone segment, as well as preparing for its upcoming iPhone launch.

However, private cellular operators will spend less on capital expenditure this year, due to limited net growth in subscriber numbers.

Zhang said Huawei globally and in Thailand had recorded satisfactory growth last year.

"We are interested in taking part in all telecom projects we are specialised in," he added.
