GM assures Asean buyers of satefy

The safety recalls issued by General Motors Company only affect models sold in the US, Canada and Mexico only, while Asia-Pacific and Asean markets are not affected by this recall mainly because these models are not available in these markets, according to General Motors.

Affected models include the Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, Pontiac G4 and Pontiac Pursuit, after issues were discovered with the motor in the power steering system. A total of 1.3 million vehicles are involved.

In a statement, the US automaker said that models in the Asia-Pacific and Asean markets do not share any common parts with the affected models.

"Despite the fact that the Asean markets are not affected, GM Thailand/ASEAN remain fully committed to the quality and safety of our products and we will do all we can to maintain our products' high levels of integrity," Steve Carlisle, President of GM Thailand/ASEAN said.

Carlisle added, "GM's voluntary recall is a sign of the company's proactive commitment to the customer and to addressing and solving quality issues."

The problem with the affected vehicles isn't life-threatening - it only requires more steering efforts at low speeds. The car can still be steered safely.
