'The man with no shadow' and other stories: a tribute to Georges Schwizgebel
After screening successful Thai shorts and classical films, private art library The Reading Room off Charoen Krung Road launches a new film programme tomorrow from 2pm onwards.
Organised by Film Virus, this week's "Animation Unlimited" programme is devoted to Swiss filmmaker Georges Schwizgebel.
A key player in contemporary animated filmmaking over the last 30 years, Schwizgebel has won various awards for his works at Cannes, Annecy, Zagreb, Hiroshima, Stuttgart and Ottawa. His signature style of vibrant painting-cum-animation creates both conflicting and complimentary moods and his wonderful fusion of music and art in a highly surreal and witty manner offers the viewer mesmerising visual acrobatics.
Schwizgebel's works will be screened for more than an hour in a programme that includes "Hors-jeu" (1977), "Perspectives" (1975), "Le vol d'lcare" (1974), "Le sujet du tableau" (1989), "Le ravissement de Frank N Stein" (1982), "The Year of the Deer" (1995), "Zig Zag" (1996), "Fugue" (1998), "The Young Girl and the Cloud" (2001), "The Man with No Shadow" (2004) and "Jeu" (2006).
After the intermission, the show continues with the 138-programme "Classic Animations". Highlights include Czech Jiri Barta's "The Vanished World of Gloves" (1982, 16 minutes), American Phil Mulloy's "Intolerance III - The Final Solution" (2004, 24 minutes) and "The Old Lady and the Pigeons" (1998, 22 minutes) by Frenchman Sylvain Chomet, who also created the award-winning "Les Triplettes de Belleville" ("The Triplets of Belleville").
Other animations "25 Ways To Quit Smoking" by Bill Plympton, "Balance" by the Lauenstein Brothers, "Tango" by Zbigniew Rybczynski, "Au Bout Du Monde" by Konstantin Bronzit, "Crac" by Canadian Frederic Back and "Special Delivery" by John Weldon and Eunice Macaulay Strange.
There'll be a discussion on animated films by Film Virus members after screening.
