Dog breeder dies from rabies

A dog breeder's death on February 14 from rabies at Bangkok's Chatuchak Weekend Market has prompted officials to find others who might be involved to get vaccinated, Deputy Bangkok Governor Dr Malinee Sukavejworakit said yesterday.

After the death of a female Public Health Ministry official, who also owned a dogbreeding shop called "Take Care Pet Shop" at the market, Malinee said she had ordered officials to investigate the dog's origins.

They are also checking to find out who had visited the shop so they can be vaccinated against rabies. The city will also arrange vaccinations for people in the fivekilometre radius and have officials inspect the Chatuchak Market on Saturday, she said.

Malinee said city officials would also have the Food and Drug Administration test the rabies vaccine that the victim had bought to inject the dogs with. She added that the incident had prompted the city to alert related agencies to keep an eye on pet shops both at Chatuchak market and several shopping malls.
