Suwat upbeat on coalition survival, gov't to complete term

Faction leader Suwat Liptapanlop from Ruam Jai Thai Chart Pattana Party on Tuesday voiced optimism the government would complte its term and dismissed a doom scenario about coalition break-up.

"The debate on charter amendments is not an issue to break up the coalition alliance despite differences among the partners," he said.

Suwat said he did not expect the charter rewrite to impact on political stability.

"Charter rewriting is not a matter of life and death for the country and the debate should not be allowed to spiral out of control," he said, noting he deemed it unjustified to push for the charter amendments at the risk of widening the political divide.

The coalition partners would not make stake the fate of their alliance on the success or failure of the charter rewrite, he said.

To allay concern about political jitters triggered by the charter amendments, the prime minister has already assigned Social Action Party leader Suwit Khunkitti to mediate among the coalition partners to form a common ground on the matter, he said.

He was speaking at the sidelines while welcoming well-wishers at his birthday party.

In marking his birthday, he said he had three wishes - the country at peace, the economic recovery and the governmnt completing its term for the remaining two years.

He said he was upbeat that the government was on tract to revitalise the eononomy. The key to the government survival was not about the political volatility but its ability to bring about the economic recovery, he added.

Commenting on the looming verdict on the Bt76 billion in impounded assets of ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra, he said parties concerned should try to thwart the eruption of violence.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, Cabinet members and ranking politicians turned out in full force to wish him a happy birthday. Coalition partners took the opportunity to had lunch together in a bid to dispel doubt on coalition unity.
