A soldier was killed yesterday and another severely wounded when suspected insurgents opened fire at them in Narathiwat.
The two soldiers were guarding a market when the militants passed them at noon in a pickup truck, attacked them with an M-16 assault rifle and a AK-47 assault rifle and fled.
Master Sgt First Class Warayuth Nookaew died on his way to Narathiwat Hospital but Private Supachai Putthong survived.
Earlier at 7.30am, a suspected separatist was killed in a clash with soldiers and paramilitary troops who raided their forest camp near Savohulu village in Tambon Savo of Rusoh district.
Acting on a tip-off, 35 soldiers were deployed and a gunfight broke out lasting about 20 minutes. Afterwards, a dead body was found left behind.
The man was later identified as Hanadi, a resident of Raman district.
