Chiang Mai province's Administrative Court yesterday order the provincial governor to suspend the ban on transgendered people joining the annual flower festival parade.
According to the court order, transgendered people or people who wear clothing that "shows transexuality" can sit on a flowerfestooned car that will join the competition.
The Chiang Mai government had issued announcement on November 29 requiring men or women sitting on a car in the competition to wear "polite dress". Clothing that showed transsexuality was prohibited.
"The court's order reflects that our rights still exist," said Natee Teerarojjanaphongs, a gay man who leads the Chiang Mai Araya Group said after the decision was announced.
Citing the Constitution's Article 30 (2), Natee said people could not be discriminated against because of race, language, age, disability, health, economic or social status, religion, education, political perspective or gender.
