Hutch to focus on competitive call packages

HutchisonCAT Wireless Multimedia this year will focus on maintaining its subscriber base by offering competitive promotional packages for calls.

This is a shift from last year when it focused on offering competitive handset prices, Paiboon Srisawatampai, assistant vice president for postpaid marketing, said yesterday.

The company has more than 1 million subscribers, of which 40 per cent are postpaid customers, he said. The company's postpaid service generates an average monthly revenue per user of about Bt700.

The company is a joint venture between CAT Telecom and Hong Kong telecom operator Hutchison Telecom.

It leases the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) 2000 1x highspeed datatransmission cellular net¬work in 25 provinces from Hutchison's wholly owned subsidiary BFKT to market the service under the Hutch brand.

CAT is in talks with Hutchison Telecom on the possibility of merging the BFKT network with that of its own separate CDMA network in 51 provinces.

It recently submitted to the Information and Communications Technology Ministry its plan to pur¬chase Hutchison Telecom's business in Thailand, including BFKT's CDMA network in 25 provinces.

Once the ministry gives its approval, CAT will sub¬mit the plan to the National Economic and Social Development Board and then the Cabinet.

CAT reportedly proposed purchasing Hutchison Telecom's business and CDMA network for a maximum of Bt7.5 billion. It will talk to Hutchison Telecom about the final price once Cabinet approval is received.
