China imposes antidumping measures on terephthalic acid from Thailand

Thailand and South Korea are facing temporary antidumping measures on terephthalic acid from China's Commerce Ministry.

A preliminary ruling requires Chinese importers of terephthalic acid from the two countries to place antidumping deposits from tomorrow, Xinhua News Agency reported yesterday.

A ministry statement said Thai and South Korean companies had been dumping terephthalic acid into the Chinese market, causing substantial damage to China's domestic industry.

The statement also listed deposit rates for products imported from South Korea at 2.411.2 per cent and from Thailand at 12.220.1 per cent.

In a separate statement, the ministry said it would prolong its antidumping investigation into terephthalic acid from the two countries for another six months, until August 12.

The decision was made because "the situation in this case is quite special and complicated", it said without giving further details.

The ministry started the probe last February 12. At the time, it said it would normally be finished in a year but could be extended.

Terephthalic acid is an organic compound used in polyester coatings and resins.
