Flying Pig gangster found dead in cell

Justice Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga has ordered an investigation into the death of Supat Noenwichian, a member of the Flying Pig criminal gang who was found dead in Bangkok Remand Prison yesterday.

An initial examination suggested Supat, 29, hanged himself while in solitary confinement, using the lining of his shorts.

He left a suicide note.

Pirapan said: "I have set up a committee to look into this case to make sure we get the truth."

Supat was a member of the Flying Pig gang, which robbed many luxury homes in Bangkok and adjacent provinces. The gang allegedly stole Bt200 million worth of valuables.

He was arrested alongside another accomplice. Both had tried unsuccessfully to flee from Taling Chan court a week ago. They were then put in solitary confinement.

In his suicide note, Supat told his parents: "I am so sorry for having caused you grief. I would like to apologise for the wrongs I've done. Please don't worry about me. I am going to rest in peace".

The note to his wife said: "I love you. We will of course meet at a good place later. Please don't worry about me…"

Department of Corrections director-general Chartchai Sutthiklom believed Supat committed suicide out of stress.

Bangkok Remand Prison acting chief Sopon Thitithammapreuk said an autopsy would be conducted on Supat's body to determine the exact cause of his death.

"Available evidence now suggests there's no foul play and no prison warden is involved in his death. If there's new evidence that indicates otherwise, I won't spare the wrongdoers," Sopon said.
