SOUTH CRISIS

Deputy PM Suthep to visit south

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said Wednesday he will visit the southern provinces next week following series of violence in the deep southern provinces in the past few days.

On Tuesday, the assailants fired on patrons and hurled a homemade explosive at a roadside food shop in Narathiwat province, killing two and wounding many others.

On the same day, a car bomb exploded in front of one of the town's hotels, killing one and and wounding many more.

Suthep said that he would visit the three southern provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat on October 13 to inspect the situation after the latest bomb attacks.

Suthep told reporters that he believed the assailants of the both attacks were from the same group which carried out violence in the past and wanted their attack to show that they still have power in the area.

He added security officers must work hard and the area was open to the public so it was difficult to carry out preventative inspections against such a bomb.

Suthep also insisted that the government policy to resolve the southern problems was on the right track and that Thailand's neighbouring country was giving good cooperation in addressing the problem.

During Asean summit to be held in Hua Hin-Cha-am districts later this month, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and his Malaysian counterpart Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak will visit the southern provinces together but the date will be coordinated by the two countries.
