Unqualified, disqualified
Dear Dr English,
What is the difference in the meanings of ÒunqualifiedÓ and ÒdisqualifiedÓ in the following sentences?
1.David was disqualified for the tournament.
2. Mary was an unqualified librarian.
Thank you,
Suda Siriraksa
People who are unqualified have no qualifications that are necessary for a particular job. This might come from the fact that they did not pass or take the exam that would provide them with the qualification. But when we talk about a disqualified person, we are talking about a person who is officially prevented from taking part in an event, activity or competition because they have broken a rule or law.
No matter what, we cannot employ unqualified nurses.
Every participant must write an essay on how to help conserve the environment, but since Tim did not write the essay himself, he was disqualified.

Transitions
Dear Dr English,
Could you please explain how to use the following words in writing: consequently, inevitably and albeit?
Thank you.
Supawadee Osakun
All three words are transitions; which are words, phrases or sometimes sentences that guide readers as they read through a text and signal connections among ideas. Consequently means Òas a resultÓ, so it is used to show cause and effect.
Maitree was drunk when he drove home; consequently he was arrested for drunken driving.
Inevitably is used to indicate a conclusion or result; as an adverb, the word means Òin a way that cannot be avoidedÓ or Òthe only possible resultÓ.
SusanÕs extramarital affair inevitably gave her husband a good reason to divorce.
The last word, albeit; we use it to introduce a fact or comment which adds more details to what we have just mentioned. It is in the same group as ÒthoughÓ, ÒalthoughÓ.
It is a well-supplied store, albeit rather expensive.
