คำว่า pickle น่าจะมีที่มาจากการค้าทางเรือของอังกฤษในแถบทะเลเหนือในตอนปลายของสมัยกลาง คือ ช่วง ค.ศ. 1000 ถึง 1400 คำว่า pikel ปรากฏ ในภาษาอังกฤษ เป็นครั้งแรกในราวปี ค.ศ.1400 โดยสมัยนั้น ยังมีความหมายว่าเป็นซอส หรือ เกรวี่ ที่ปรุงรสด้วยเครื่องเทศ สำหรับทานกับเนื้อ สัตว์ ซึ่งต่างจากความหมายที่ใช้ในปัจจุบัน แต่กลับไปมีความหมายใกล้เคียงกับคำในภาษาดัชท์ ว่า pekel ซึ่งหมายถึงน้ำเกลือปรุงด้วยเครื่องเทศใช้สำหรับถนอมอาหาร หรือ น้ำดองผักนี่แหละค่ะ หลังจากถูกนำมาใช้ในภาษาอังกฤษแล้ว เจ้า pekel คำนี้มีความหมายแตกออกไปมากมาย รวมทั้งหมายถึงอาหารที่ดองด้วยส่วนผสมนี้ด้วย เช่น แตงกวา หัวหอม ต่อมา ความหมายของคำนี้ถูกใช้ไปในเชิงเปรียบเทียบ ซึ่งสันนิษฐาว่า น่าจะเป็นอิทธิพลจากภาษาดัทช์ด้วยเช่นกัน ดังจะเห็นจากวลีในภาษาดัทช์ว่า 'in de pekel zitten' หมายถึง 'sit in the pickle' และ 'iemand in de pekel laten zitten' หมายถึง 'let someone sit in the pickle' ลองคิดดูเอาเองแล้วกันว่า แช่อยู่ในน้ำดองผักน่ะ จะมีสภาพแบบไหน ถ้าไม่ใช่สภาพที่เป็นปัญหา

ส่วนคำว่า imprudent นั้น เป็น adjective มีรากศัพท์มาจากคำว่า prudent หมายถึง to be sensible and careful เมื่อเติม prefix imŽ เป“น imprudent ก็ให้ความหมายตรงข้าม ว่า to be careless or unwise
