Why is present tense used
for past situations?
Dear Dr English,
I would like to know why we use present simple tense for past situations and why we skip the verb "to be" when it is in the passive voice.
Sirima Chotechutip
You are referring to tenses and structures used in news headlines, which do not follow the same grammar rules as in general English. The most important characteristic of headlines is that they are short. To facilitate this, some of the usual rules of English grammar are suspended. Words that can be understood are usually left out of the headlines. Examples of these words are the definite and indefinite articles (a, an, the) and the verb "to be" in both the active and the passive voice.

What is a cliche?
Dear Dr English,
I read an English lecturer's profile and found the word "cliche". However, a dictionary says "cliche" is a synonym for "jargon". What does "a cliche" mean in regard to his profile?
Patcharee Tieachunpun
Since you did not provide the context in which the word "cliche" was used, it is rather difficult to say the exact meaning used in the lecturer's profile. However, I'll try my best.
A cliche usually means an idea, expression or way of behaving that has been used so much that it is no longer original or effective. This meaning is a synonym for "jargon".
Another meaning for "cliche" that might fit the context you talked about is a stereotype plate or any similar reproduction of an ornament or lettering in relief.
Or "cliche casting", which is a method of obtaining an impression from a die or woodcut, or something of a similar character, by striking it suddenly upon metal that has been fused and is just turning solid, thus obtaining a casting.
