Games from Childhood

Dear Dr English,

What do you call the children's games, ja-eh and pow yin choop in English? I don't know if Western children also play these games. Thank you very much for your time.

Sansanee

Of course Western children play these games too. Isn't it amazing that children from lands far away from each other play games that are exactly the same?

For ja-eh, it is peekaboo. You cover your face with your hand or hide yourself behind something and suddenly you take your hand away or step out from your hiding place and say: "peekaboo"!

Pow yin choop is a game in which two players display their "secret weapon" through hand signs, be it rock, paper or scissors. We have all played this game before, haven't we? From the list of the "secret weapons" comes the name of the game, rock, paper, scissors.

Miss or think of

Dear Dr English,

I would like to know if there is any difference in the meaning when I use the phrases "miss you" and "think of you". Can you explain the difference to me? Thank you.

Tinnakrit Ongartpasu

Are you trying to give somebody a hint of how you feel about her? Don't worry, I will help you. When you think of somebody, you have a positive feeling about them. You show your consideration for them and pay attention to their needs.
I found this Chinese abacus at a night market and thought of you.

I knew you would be very happy to have one. That's why I bought it for you.
"Miss you" shows a stronger feeling. When you miss someone, you feel lonely without them and want very much to be with them or have them around.

The two boys really missed their mother when she went to work in a different town.
The young man sent his girlfriend a long message telling her how much he missed her.
Now you know which one to use.
