Oversee และ overlook จะว่าไปแล้วสองคำนี้น่าจะมีความหมายเหมือนกัน หรืออย่างน้อยก็คล้ายๆ กัน แต่ไม่ค่ะ เรามาทำความเข้าใจกันทีละคำ โดยดูหัวข้อข่าว เมื่อสองสามสัปดาห์ที่แล้ว เกี่ยวกับในหลวงที่ทรงเมตตาพสกนิกรที่ต้องประสบภัยแล้ง ทั่วประเทศ โดยได้ทรงตั้งคณะเจ้าหน้าที่เพื่อทำฝนหลวงมาช่วยพวกเรา ซึ่งนับเป็นพระมหากรุณาธิคุณเป็นล้นพ้นแก่ปวงชนชาวไทย

To oversee กริยานี้ให้ความหมายต่างกัน เมื่อใช้ต่างภาวะ คือ

a. ถ้า to oversee a job จะหมายความว่า to make sure it is done properly while watching someone as they do it.
Somsak's responsibility is to oversee the implementation of the company's IT system.

b. เมื่อใช้กับบุคคล to oversee someone คือ to watch or spy on them, especially in order to control their actions; เป็นคำที่เป็นทางการ

จะเห็นว่า overseeให้ความหมายในลักษณะของการเฝ้าดู จะเป็นดูแลงาน หรือ (จับตา)ดูคน แต่ overlook เป็นนัยของการละเลย ไม่ดู ไม่เห็น ยกเว้นความหมายแรกที่ใช้กับสถานที่ ซึ่งหมายความว่ามองเห็นสิ่งใดจากสถานที่นั้น
