"WANNA" IN MUSIC

Dear Dr English,

Could you please explain the meaning of "wanna" in music?
Thank you

Kamon Suttikulanon

Wanna is an informal word. It is a shortened form of two phrases, the first one is "want to":
You wanna eat now or later?
The second one is "want a":
Wanna cup of coffee?
It is acceptable to use wanna in lyrics or poems or in informal situations. I would not suggest you use it in formal occasions.

LOOKING FOR LEARNING MATERIALS

Dear Dr English,

I'm looking for a language course on CD or cassette tape for a Thai speaker wanting to learn English. From the USA everything is learning Thai for English speakers. Please recommend.

Sam Brown

I am not aware of any Thai-English bilingual learning materials that I could conscientiously recommend. However, any major publisher offers monolingual materials for learning English. You should find what you are looking for easily through the Internet.

HOSPITALITY TERM

Dear Dr English,

Recently, I made a reservation at a hotel. I received a confirmation letter from the hotel stating, "one bedroom valid for two pax only". What does "pax" mean?

Sho Naruse

"Pax" means person or persons. It is special terminology used in the hotel business.

CAN WE "EXPECT" SOMETHING UNHAPPY

Dear Dr English,

Recently I read an article that said, "he expects the death toll to increase". Can he "expect" something to happen if it makes him unhappy? I thought that "expect" implies "good results".

Sho Naruse

When we "expect" something to happen, we believe that it will happen because of the information we have already known or from the situation we are in. The word does not give indication whether the result will be good or bad.
We expect that the company will give us a big bonus because of the high revenue throughout the year.
But "hope", in the meaning of feeling, is the desire or expectation that things will go well in the future.
Is there any hope for a cheaper oil price?
