WORLD/GLOBE/EARTH

Dear Dr English

Could you please explain the differences and similarities of these three words: world, globe and earth. It would be great if you could kindly give some examples of how to use them too.

Mon

In English, the three words have slightly different meanings. In Thai they mean the same, that's why we get a bit confused at times. Let's look at the word "globe" for a start. The word is used to refer to the Earth. In this sense, globe is used when we want to emphasise how big the Earth is or that something is true in many parts of the world. For this context, globe has the same meaning as "world".

The ceremony will be seen on television all over the globe.
The ceremony will be seen on television all over the world.

Another meaning of globe is the model of the Earth with the world map printed on it and fixed on a stand. The kind we see in the office of our geography teacher.
The teacher asked students to look for the Sahara Dessert on the globe.

The earth is the planet on which we live.
Hairy mammoths were extinct from Earth thousands of years ago.

The planet is also referred to as Earth.
Jupiter has more moons than Earth.
In another meaning, earth means soil.
Many human remains were found buried in the earth.

World can mean the planet we live on, which is the same meaning as earth and globe.
Hairy mammoths were extinct from the world thousands of years ago.
Homo sapiens has been living in the world for many thousands of years.
Homo sapiens has been living on earth for many thousands of years.
Homo sapiens has been living on the globe for many thousands of years.
Please notice the prepositions used with world, earth and globe.

In the next two meanings world is different from globe and earth. The first one expresses the idea of something being international or global.

Thailand is one of the biggest rice producers in the world.

The second refers to all the societies, institutions and way of life of people living on this planet.
We all hope the world could be a better place.

Hope the explanations clear up your confusion.
