Though I don’t agree with Ye Olde Theologian’s views on the genesis (excuse the pun) of Christianity, we both hit bullseye when it comes to teaching comparative religion in schools.
In the academic arena, this area of study has also come to be known as “worldview” and encompasses the notion of four important aspects of life: origin, meaning, morality and destiny. I support this concept because students need to be educated on atheism and agnosticism as well as their respective beliefs.
Though they are not deity-based philosophies, like most mainstream religions they do seek to proselytise and convert members. We need to teach all perspectives and let children decide for themselves.
Ye Olde Theologian refutes Christian Knottone’s remarks as do I, but I need to add that between 1940 and 1945, 12,000 bodies per day were pushed into incinerators by the most educated nation on earth.
Viktor Frankl, author of “Man’s Search for Meaning”, and a former Nazi camp prisoner said: “I am absolutely convinced that the gas chambers of Auschwitz, Treblinka, and Maidanek were prepared not in some ministry in Berlin, but rather at the desks and lecture halls of nihilistic scientists and philosophers.”
They, apparently too, were gifted with large brains.
