Re: “Decision to scrap elephant polo is a sad day for elephant welfare,” Have Your Say, October 10.
Spare a thought for poor Bill Heinecke. Jason Baker of PETA and Eric Bahrt of Chiang Mai want the Minor Group to stop sponsoring elephant polo matches because they think they’re cruel, so Bill does just that. Then A Bangkok Atheist complains that elephant polo is okay, it’s not cruel at all, and he likes it.
What is Bill supposed to do – conduct a referendum on the issue? He’s damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t.
If philanthropists like him get attacked by whingers no matter what they do, they’re likely to give up their philanthropic activities entirely, and the world will be poorer for it.
