Temple not alone in having a toll to pay

Re: “Bid to find middle ground in temple bell-ringing drama”, News, October 6.

I’m not trying to be fastidious, but when you said “bell-ringing” or “ring the bell”, it gives an impression of the bell on a counter service or a house front door.

I think the verb should be “toll”. Tolling a bell gives a clear expression of a church bell or a temple bell, not the little bell you ring to call your butler. It would be awkward if Hemingway titled his 1940 novel “For Whom the Bell Rings”, wouldn’t it?
