Re: “Holy Cow! Weaning a billion Indians off the udder won’t be easy”, Have Your Say, yesterday.
I confess that I used the wrong word when I called Robin Grant a “glutton”. If it makes him feel better I’ll just say he gives higher priority to his taste buds than he does to animal rights, human health or the environment. In fact the headline of one of his letters was “On the immense pleasure of eating meat, fish and dairy”.
His defence for all animal abuse (elephant riding, wearing fur coats, fox hunting, etc) is that if people get pleasure from abusing animals, that’s all that matters, and animal rights people shouldn’t bother the abusers.
Let’s apply that thinking to the abuse of humans. Should we say, if people get pleasure from committing rape, society should not interfere with the rapist’s fun? Or is it better to simply say it’s great to have fun as long as you’re not hurting anyone else – human or animal?
