As the world rallied to help the Wild Boars and their coach trapped in the cave, one key agency was out of sight, out of mind. According to reports, “the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation was nowhere to be seen in the past two weeks”.

The department’s proud mission is, “To be a leading manager of risk from danger to the public, meeting international standards, to make Thailand safer.” Yet its director-general Chayapol Titisak and his orange-helmeted men were unseen anywhere throughout the entire the rescue period.

Chayapol, having shown himself to apparently be an unmitigated disaster, hibernating, PM Prayut and Minister of Interior Anupong should immediately move him to an inactive post and investigate whether he should be sacked or replaced.
