It seems as though the letter writer, Nick, is referring to Thaksin Shinawatra’s abuse of power to justify the current junta. But the last coup had nothing to do with him, because at the time he had been out of power for years.
What indirectly led to the last coup was when the then-prime minister Yingluck backed an unpopular amnesty bill. There were peaceful and lawful protests throughout the country and as a result the bill was killed by the Senate.
So, didn’t that prove that democracy works?
Yet Suthep Thaugsuban and his supporters saw this as an opportunity to shut down Bangkok and overthrow the government. That’s when the military should have stepped in and thrown those people in jail.
Instead, they did nothing until Bangkok was having virtual riots and then they pulled off a coup and are still in power four years later. Of course, they could have restored law and order by simply declaring martial law for a few days.
There will never be true democracy in Thailand until the military realises that its job is not to choose a civilian government but to defend it – even if they hate it.
