Peace means readiness for war

The writer complained about Thailand’s increased military spending, saying in effect that we never have wars with any countries. Let me tell you an anecdote.

Once there was a house with a tall, strong and sturdy concrete fence and the dwellers lived in peace and safety. One day a fool complains that the house doesn’t need the fence, since it’s never been encroached on or burglarised. End of story.

Furthermore, there is a Latin adage that says, “If you want peace, prepare for war”, meaning you achieve peace through your strength. A strong country is less likely to be attacked by enemies.
