Re: “Churchill deserves a rigorous defence”, Have Your Say, February 17.
It is always more pleasant to read a constructive agreement rather than an irrelevant retaliation from a fellow contributor, but one important point needs correcting. My letter did not mention “Muslim invasion” but “Islamic invasion”. There is very great difference: Muslims are people, Islam is a totalitarian political ideology.
To make the point, I rely on the words of Winston Churchill that are far, far more profound than mine: “Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers to the Queen: all know how to die: but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytising faith.”
As with most of the great man’s writings, his words were based on experience and in this instance as an army officer in NE Africa in 1899. Winston Spencer Churchill had exceptionally sharp perception and awareness and always called a spade a spade.
