Shabby treatment of Merkel by new US president

As normal protocol, state leaders who play host to visiting leaders always go to great lengths to make their guests feel amply comfortable and highly honoured during their visit.

However, when asked to shake hands with his guest German Chancellor Angela Merkel, during their first meeting in Washington on Friday – US President Donald Trump refused to do so.

According to his biography, Mr Trump’s ancestors were also of German descent. Thus, this fact should not have made him feel superior to Chancellor Merkel in any way.

Hence, the world will be a better place to live in if Mr Trump stops thinking as if the United States is capable of being an island unto itself – which is not the fact at the moment.
